The Un-American Equity

As many “woke” corporations following the George Floyd fiasco in 2020 drop their contracts for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training from their employee routines, this administration has continued its “Equity” quest.

Merriam-Wester defines equity as justice according to natural law or freedom from bias or favoritism.

There are many references to the word equity in the financial world, including coupling it with words like sweat, home, fund, stock, and market.

It also is often referred to in context with the courts and the law, i.e., equal justice, fairness, and rightness under the law. Equity in this context means people are treated the same when charged with a crime or misdemeanor or in a civil case regardless of who they are or their means.

Equality has overlaps with the word equity, but the meaning of the way equity is used today carries a strong distinguishment from equality.

This administration has tried to represent itself by ‘virtue signaling’ on their definition of equity. Cabinet and administrative appointees are supposedly represented by all the ways our population is broken down and identified by the woke folks. So, the President and his staff say, “look at me – I’m going out of the norm to ensure representation.” That’s supposed to make all of us feel good and reflect on how wonderful these appointments are for those people and the country.

Equity in the context its attempted to be used by some today means equal outcomes, regardless of merit. It’s a substitute for the long bygone attempt at what was called affirmative action – which was struck down again recently in university admissions programs. This meaning has race and gender applications as to how groups of people are represented – black, white, male, female, etc. It would have every group made up of and represented by those distinctions. It’s gone even further with the whole transgender quagmire.

The country is not buying it.

America’s culture is not about equal outcomes. It’s not fair or just to put skin pigment or gender (selection) ahead of hard work, sacrifice, or individual choices.

If I choose to be a welder in an auto plant, the fact that I’m genetically who I am and different from some others does not qualify me to be the nation’s Secretary of Transportation. Most fair people think that that way.

So, “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” (DEI) as organizational or government programs are not the American way.

We are a diverse population. We do believe in equity when it comes to justice. We do include all segments of our society in our activities and work.

It’s interesting to note here that DEI is not applied to sports teams. Over 80% of the players in the NBA are black. 97% of players in the NHL are white. 78 of professional soccer players are white, 8% are Hispanic. 38% of MLB players are of color, 7% are black.

If all professional sports followed the woke version of equity, 12% would be black, 19% would be Hispanic, 58% would be white.

There’s a good reason professional sports team owners and coaches aren’t into woke “equity.” They want to win! To accomplish that goal, they choose the best players they can employ. Ethnic background or skin pigment has nothing to do with those decisions.

Similar stats for jobs and careers. For example, 63% of electrical engineers are white, 16% are Asian, 10% are Hispanic, 6% are black. 56% of computer technicians are white, 16% are Hispanic, 11% are black, 11% are Asian. Oh, and 13% are women.

The same argument and incentives apply to employers filling positions. They want the best people available who can contribute to making their products or services better – and add to their bottom lines.

The same American standard should apply to our government. Citizens deserve the best people available to fill different public positions. A presidential candidate should not choose a VP running mate based on ethnic or gender identity, or to use the “equity” ideology when filling cabinet or other slots.

Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the resources and opportunities needed to reach a desired outcome.

It means equal opportunity should be available to all and does not mean lowering the standards of achievement in any job or profession.

To define and use it otherwise is un-American.
